GM has mentioned it will get started repairing the car ignition problem blamed for at least 13 deaths as part of a nationwide recall this week, but a examine of far more than a dozen GM dealerships by NBC News on Monday exposed that no work has begun since the necessary elements have not but arrived.
Calls by NBC News to service departments at 13 GM dealerships in 8 states discovered that the method of repairing the faulty ignition switches had yet to commence.
The difficulty with the ignition switch allows some GM cars to accidentally be turned from “run” to the “accessory” position whilst the vehicles are getting driven, shutting down the electrical power brakes, energy steering and airbags.
“They are on their way”
Despite the apparent loss of Monday to repair the faulty ignition switches, GM spokesman Greg Martin explained the recall and fix routine stays on target.
“No delay on parts and they are on their way,” he mentioned in an electronic mail to NBC Information. “We’;ve often stated the week of April 6. … We program to send letters this week informing impacted buyers that parts are arriving at dealerships and to schedule a support appointment with their dealer. Repairs are most likely to start to stick to soon following the consumer letter mailing.”
Martin did not reply to a query about no matter whether any GM dealers had received the parts and begun repairs.
The automaker has utilized distinct language to describe the recall.
Testifying just before Congress final week, GM Chief Executive Mary Barra mentioned in response to a question that “we’;ll get started shipping material — or new parts…” on April 7.
But in at least a single graphic on the GM internet site, it said, “Beginning April 7, components will be obtainable for the following cars,” listing 2003-07 model year Saturn Ions and Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 Pursuit models from 2005-2007. The graphic was becoming “updated” Monday and was not viewable on the web site, stated Martin, the GM spokesman. He mentioned it would be republished on Tuesday.
A graphic from GM’;s website informed buyers that “starting April 6, parts will be obtainable.”
The services manager at one big-city dealership, who spoke to NBC News on issue of anonymity simply because “we have been instructed not to speak to media about this matter,” confirmed that no ignition recall-relevant repairs had been performed because no parts had been obtained.
But he defended GM’s dealing with of the recall, particularly in its recommendation that drivers remove the motor vehicle important from a key ring to lessen torque, creating it extremely unlikely that it could be accidentally switched off by the added bodyweight of other keys.
“That leaves no probability for failure – and that is really critical,” he explained.
